What is maskne and what can you do to avoid it?
The past few months have been the ultimate rollercoaster ride and lockdown measures are beginning to lift in the UK but there is a new rule in place having to wear a face mask or covering, which for many of us has had an impact on our skin. Maskne (mask acne) is a legitimate thing- it is the result of friction of fabric against the skin resulting in an acne flare. Breathing into a tight space also causes moisture to be trapped underneath the fabric which gets worse with humidity, heat and exercise- accelerating the process.
So how can you tailor your skincare regime to help tackle maskne breakouts?
Before wearing your mask
- Hygiene is key - to prevent maskne, good hygiene is essential. We suggest using a fragrance-free cleanser designed for sensitive skin with lukewarm water to remove any accumulated oils and impurities. For oily skin, choose a foaming cleanser. If dry or irritated, try a cream cleanser. Pat your face gently to dry the skin.
- Skip the makeup – with the majority of your face covered, is foundation still an essential? To reduce the risk of clogged pores and build up of bacteria of the skin, we suggest replacing your foundation with a tinted moisturiser like BB cream.
